Name of Assignment: Feasibility Study for a Bankable 200MW Concentrating Solar
Thermal Power Plant _ Tender No. 6952/10
Date: 16th July 2010
Project ID: P112516 and P-BW-FFO-001
Loan Nos. 7801-BW and 5500155002851
The Government of Botswana has received financing from World Bank andAfrican Development Bank towards the cost of Morupule B Generation and Transmission Project. It has also received grant from the African Development Bank to prepare a feasibility study of 200 MW Concentrating Solar Thermal Power Plant. The Government of Botswana intends to applypart of the proceeds to procure consultancy services to undertake a feasibility study for a bankable 200MW Concentrating Solar Thermal Power Plant.
The Government of Botswana, through Botswana Power Corporation (BPC),has completed a pre-feasibility study for a 200 MW Concentrated SolarThermal Power Plant. The outcome of the study confirms that indeed Botswana is receiving enough solar irradiation that can be harnessed to generate electricity through concentrating solar power technology. Furthermore, five suitable sites being Selebi Phikwe, Maun, Letlhakeng, Serowe and Jwaneng have been identified as being potential sites with DNI annual sum of 2359, 2298, 2396, 2432 and 2745 kWh/m²/annum respectively. Parabolic troughs were the recommended concentrating solar thermal power technology among others.
The objective of this assignment is to undertake a feasibility study for a bankable 200MW Concentrating Solar Thermal Power Plant. The scope of work will include:
- Designing a 200MW net thermal power plant;
- Elaboration on discrete components involved in the power plant from solar fields, instrumentation and control, power block steam cycle and potential supplementary firing;
- Performing a detailed financial and economic analysis. The analysis shall consist of calculation for electricity generation costs and sensitivity analysis on the electricity generation costs in relation to CAPEX, OPEX, discounted rate, solar irradiation variance and plant degradation;
- Identification of Project Risks and coming up with appropriate mitigating measures;
- Performing a detailed assessment of plant location and design from the pre-selected areas referred to in the pre-feasibility study.
The assignment is expected to be completed within 12 Months.
Botswana Power Corporation now invites eligible consultants to indicate their interest in providing the services. Interested consultants must provide information indicating that they are qualified to perform the services through submission of brochures, description of similar assignments, experience in similar conditions, availability of appropriate skills among staff, etc. Consultants may associate to enhance theirqualifications.
