EMPLOYER: Council for Geoscience

PROJECT: Technical Assistance Project for Carbon Capture and Storage in the Republic of South Africa

CONTRACT TITLE: Service provider for drilling of an 1800 m deep core borehole for geological characterisation for the CCUS project in the Lebohang (Leandra) area, Govan Mbeki local municipality in the Mpumalanga Province, South Africa

COUNTRY: Republic of South Africa

GRANT NO.: TF-A3137

RFB NO: ZA-CGS-299301-NC-RFB

ISSUED ON: 30 June 2023

  • The Republic of South Africa has received financing from the World Bank towards the cost of the Technical Assistance Project for Carbon Capture and Storage in the Republic of South Africa, and intends to apply part of the proceeds toward payments under the contract for “Drilling and well construction activities for site characterization and development of a single vertical stratigraphic core borehole to the depth of 1800m. For this contract, the Borrower shall process the payments using the Direct Payment disbursement method, as defined in the World Bank’s Disbursement Guidelines for Investment Project Financing.
  • The Council for Geoscience (CGS) now invites sealed Bids from eligible Bidders for drilling the borehole for geological characterisation for the pilot CO2 injection and monitoring. The assignment will be executed in Leandra, Mpumalanga Province, South Africa.

The borehole is also to be utilised for sub-surface baseline (passive and active) monitoring activities. At various intervals during the drilling, suites of geophysical instruments will be installed in the borehole to obtain geophysical information. In addition, tests to determine the presence and quantity of gasses and tests to determine hydrological information will be conducted at certain horizons in the borehole. The Contractor is allowed to sub-contract parts of this work to complement capacity.,

The work requires the following:

  • Drilling of one proposed vertical stratigraphic borehole to a maximum depth of approximately 1,800 meters below ground level
  • Running of suites of geophysical logs in the borehole, and
  • Obtaining water samples at certain depths of the borehole for analysis and other formation fluids that can be utilised towards establishing the baseline environmental conditions. Given that these elements of work will be conducted at various times while drilling the borehole, the contractor will be responsible for providing all of the additional services required as indicated above as a part of the contract and the contractor will be entitled to bill CGS at the rates specified in the Bill of Quantities for these services.
