Description

UNICEF has now issued a Request for Proposals in order to select a vendor to conduct the Cost efficiency and effectiveness analysis of management models for moderate child wasting.

The objective is to compare standard models of MAM management with the “new” MAM management models piloted under JASW and in line with the 2023 WHO Guideline on the prevention and management of acute malnutrition in infants and children under five years of age. As the JASW partnership model is specifically designed for humanitarian contexts, the focus of this exercise will therefore be in these contexts but findings from this analysis will be available to inform future analysis for other contexts. The standard model refers to supplementing all MAM children with RUSF (Ready-to-Use Supplementary Food) only through various implementation modalities, regardless of risk criteria and without the systematic inclusion of medical and psychosocial assessments nor food assistance. The “new” model refers to supplementing MAM children at higher risk of poor outcomes – based on selected individual and/or social criteria - using SFF in addition to the provision of medical care and food support to all children with MAM and their families. Based on the context, different scenarios exist for this new model, e.g. children with MAM who do not present specific individual or social risk factors might receive RUSF, an improved Fortified Blended Food (FBF), local supplementary foods or an alternative approach, according to the local context.
